Though things have been a little busy over the last few weeks, I can’t imagine welcoming fall without ensuring that we bring home a few mums for the front porch. The problem is that Florida’s weather is so warm that it can nearly obliterate a perfectly healthy mum in just a few short days. If you live in a warm to outright hot environment, you know exactly what I mean.
Disclaimer: I’m no expert in gardening….BUT…these tips have worked like a charm for me, so here goes…
TIP # 1: Water, Water + Water
So all things in moderation but mums in warm environments need a daily drink of water. We used to water our mums every 2-3 days but the plants would shrivel and fail to bloom. We now water daily and our plants bloom continously.
TIP # 2: Proper Potting + Soil Drainage
This should probably go without saying…but make sure that your plant is in the right container. For us, this means making sure that the plant has decent room to develop in the pot that you place it in. Also, check the soil and make sure that your pot allows for proper drainage. While you want to keep your plant moist, you should definitely avoid allowing water to accummulate around the root system.
TIP # 3: Liquid Fertilizer
This tip has really been a life-saver for my mums. I mix a little Miracle Grow Liquafeed in my plants every 2-3 weeks (I think the bottle recommends 1-2 weeks) and shall we say…the rest is history. This plant feed works miracles (pun intended) on all of my indoor plants so I knew that it would be beneficial on my mums.
If you have tips that have worked well for your mums, please share, I’m always happy to hear from you!
